Do you know what Black History Month is in celebration of? Black History Month comes around every February. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

2. “A Change Is Gonna Come” – Sam Cooke
3. “Sinnerman” – Nina Simone
4. “What’s Going On” – Marvin Gaye
5. “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud” – James Brown
6. “Respect” – Aretha Franklin
7. “The Message” – Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
8. “Formation” – Beyoncé
9. “Alright” – Kendrick Lamar
10. “This Is America” – Childish Gambino
This is a diverse list of songs that are relevant to the theme of Black history, culture, and empowerment. Some of these songs were written during the Civil Rights Movement and others were written more recently, but all of them have made an impact on Black culture and history.
