Our Point Blank Deconstructions have become one of the many reasons those thirsty for Music Production & Sound Engineering knowledge regularly visit our site and keep coming back time and time again. For those of you who may not be familiar with what one of our deconstructions entails, it’s where Ski Oakenfull, our Head of Education and Development, takes a well-known track and breaks it down to its core elements then recreates it before your very eyes. This year has been especially prolific for our deconstruction series and has seen Ski, and other PB staff, tackle some of the industry’s biggest hits.

If you’re interested in watching how beats like the below are made, our online courses are jam-packed with this kind of content. Plus, we’re currently offering 20% off our selected online, LA and London Professional courses until 31st December using the code: WINTER20.

Deconstruction: The Mandalorian Theme Song by Ludwig Göransson w/ Claude Ruelle

In this Deconstruction, Point Blank’s composition for film and TV lecturer, Claude Ruelle, breaks down the main theme behind the Disney+ show The Mandalorian. Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian is the first live-action series in the Star Wars franchise. Since its release in 2019, the programme has won multiple awards, including seven Emmy’s in 2020 with the score itself taking home the Emmy award for Outstanding Music Composition.

Deconstruction: Dua Lipa – ‘Don’t Start Now’ w/ Ski Oakenfull

Taken from Dua Lipa’s LP Future Nostalgia, ‘Don’t Start Now’ was released back in 2020 and stormed the charts, ranking at #2 in the UK and #1 in the US Dance Hits chart. The track’s most prominent feature is easily its funk bassline, which Ski delves into during the video.

Deconstruction: LFO – ‘LFO’ w/ Chris Martin

Released via Warp in 1990, LFO has gone on to garner classic status and even helped propel the Warp label to what it is known as today. Sitting comfortably in the techno/bleep techno genres, ‘LFO’ features rhythmic drum machine patterns, experimental glitches, cavernous sub-bases and more. What was supposed to be an underground track for raves and warehouse parties, ‘LFO’ received some mainstream success peaking at no. 12 in the UK Charts.

If you’d like to learn more about any of the techniques shown above, Point Blank offers courses for those at any level.
