Bitwig provides its users with small and often fine updates at regular intervals. But now we are talking about a real major update because Bitwig Studio 4 is now available. Here is an overview of the new features of the Bitwig Studio 4 digital audio workstation.

Audio comping

With the comping function, Bitwig Studio offers the possibility of combining the best parts of many takes. Each take can be displayed with its own color, so that it is always clear where the part that you are currently using comes from. Should it be someone else? Then simply click on the desired element in the next track and use the arrow key to put together the perfect take.

Operators

Bitwig Studio 4 Operators

The subject of modulation has always been the focus of Bitwig Studio. But now sequenced note and audio events can also become “electric”.

There are four working modes for the operators, whereby these can be used either individually or in any combination. The “Chance” mode makes every event more or less likely, “Repeats” allows each event to be triggered again at a fixed rate or simply to divide the note length into any number of pieces. In addition, there is “Occurrence”, which works under predetermined conditions, and “Recurrence”, which can be used to create a loop from every event.

Expression Spread

Bitwig has now added a spread area for each expression point via the expression automation for notes and audio. This can be used, for example, to randomize note speeds, re-panning part of a chord, drag the mood of a note to a different pitch after it has been struck, etc.

When the editor is open, all set random values are displayed at the bottom when the clip starts. The next time it is run, the new values appear (depending on the probability) so that you always have an up-to-date overview of what is changing where and how. Once a suitable combination has been found, it can be transferred to other notes if desired.

Native on Apple Silicon

At the same time as the release of Bitwit Studio 4, the Berlin-based company announced that Bitwig Studio will run natively on Apple’s new Silicon M1 computers. There is also good news for users of Intel or ARM VSTs because these will continue to be supported so that the DAW will be further developed in parallel for all current computers.

Bitwig Studio now supports three languages Chinese, Japanese, and German. The basic interface remains unaffected, but the functions, labels, and the in-app documentation, including the interactive help, can now be displayed in these languages. Bitwig Studio 4 also offers improved export functions. Parts or complete arrangements can now be played in the formats WAV, FLAC, OGG, MP3, and OPUS.

Bitwig has also added more on the import side so that data can now be imported directly from FL Studio (FLP) and Ableton Live (ALS). According to Bitwig, arrangements and clips should be imported without major impairments, the same applies to VST plug-ins.

All users with an active upgrade plan can now download and use Bitwig Studio via their accounts. The official presentation is planned for the end of June / beginning of July.
