Independent developer yg331 has released Relief Compressor, a free dynamics processor available in VST3 and AU formats for both Windows and macOS. Built with double-precision 64-bit processing, it is designed as a reliable everyday tool for mixing and mastering, and early impressions suggest it offers far more than the average freeware compressor.
At its heart, Relief Compressor gives producers the choice between five different detector modes: Peak, RMS, Linear, Logarithmic, and Hilbert-based. Each one reacts to audio in a unique way, making the plugin feel like several compressors rolled into one. The Logarithmic detector excels at catching peaks with surgical precision, while Linear mode feels more open and punchy, perfect for drums or energetic tracks. Adding to this flexibility is a fixed 0.5 ms lookahead powered by a Kaiser-Bessel FIR filter, ensuring clean transient control, plus a dedicated sidechain EQ section with two bands, shelves, and pass filters for shaping dynamics with greater focus.
